It’s time for my annual spring cleaning extravaganza. I realize it’s practically summer. But right about now is when I really start even thinking about spring cleaning. Maybe it’s because it was always easier to accomplish when the kids got out of school each year.
Have you conquered the chaos, clutter and dirt in your home yet this spring? If not, I’ve got you covered with this handy 30-Day Spring Cleaning Checklist. It’s yours for free! (Plus, be sure to read to the end for a free coupon to use toward your spring cleaning!) Get your free printable here.
Number one on the list (deep cleaning my rugs) is one of my least favorite chores. So I decided to get that over with first! Otherwise I might just might not get to it. And my rugs were a MESS!
One guess why…
Yes, Rosie is the main culprit these days. We haven’t deep cleaned the rugs since we got her in December, so that equals months of messes. At six months old, she doing MUCH better at house training. But there is still an accident here or there.
Last week we attempted to spot clean any remaining urine stains… to no avail.
Time to bring in the big guns! Now I’ve tried various methods of rug and carpet deep cleaning, including a slew of professional carpet cleaning companies. This week I decided to see which DIY rug and carpet cleaner delivers the best results: BISSELL Big Green vs. The Rug Doctor.
Yes, a face-off to determine which one deep cleans my rugs the best!
See those two rugs above? Layering rugs is on point. But my layering is not to follow a trend. Rosie completely decimated the gray and white rug on the bottom when we first got her. Not only did she have countless accidents, but she also chewed holes in it. GRRRR. I don’t want to replace that large carpet for another few months (when Rosie will hopefully be past her peeing, chewing and other destructive behavior!) In the mean time, I bought an inexpensive rug to put on top and mask the mangled, stained, wreck of a rug on the bottom. Hey, it works for us for now! But it is DIRTY!
Now back to the big face-off between the two rug and carpet cleaning rental machines…
They were both easy to rent and were priced similarly. I picked up the BISSELL Big Green at Lowes and The Rug Doctor at Albertsons. Both were pretty quick and easy to rent.
I started with one part of the living room rug with the urine stains. I went over half the chosen area with the BISSELL Big Green and the other half with The Rug Doctor. The BISSELL rental clearly won the first battle. But after comparing the two carpet cleaners, I realized The Rug Doctor machine was substantially more difficult to use. While the Bissell Big Green cleans in both directions, the other machine only cleans in one direction. So I had to exert twice as much energy to use The Rug Doctor. At that point, I decided the competition was over and chose to finish out the rug cleaning with the BISSELL Big Green.
Twenty minutes later, my indoor rugs (and even one outside door mat that Rosie regularly targets) were all clean!
The filthy water was evidence of just how dirty my rugs were! I’m so glad my rugs are super clean for summer.

Wow, the dirty water picture tells the story!
PS. I have wooden floors so no need to enter me into the contest…..I just love reading about the face-off and hearing about the success. I’ll remember Big Green!!
Thanks, Medora!
We only have one carpet in our house – in our finished basement & this would be perfect to get out some of those tough stains.
The Big Green would be perfect for your finished basement carpet!
Hah! We have the same scruffy variety of culprit.
Your rug looks brand new again!
I love your spring-cleaning checklist. So organized. I need to get my act in gear!
Thanks so much, Coco! Scruffy culprits are so bad and so good, all at the same time, right???
Wow! We also have a dog and a cat. Don’t really have problems with accidents, but my doggie has not learned how to pick up his back leg when he pees, so he pees all over his front legs. So I hate to think what is in my carpet that I can’t see! Ugh. I am looking forward to getting what I can’t see out with the Bissell Green Carpet Cleaner. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, Edna, that’s funny! Well sort of. :/ Hope your little guy learns to lift that back leg soon!
Oh, and thank you for the Coupon! Yay!
You are so welcome. Enjoy!
The ease of using a machine makes all the difference. I need to clean dirt from shoes on my carpet.
The ease of use is definitely a critical and determining factor on which rental to use! Thanks for visiting, Tara!
Thanks for al these amazing tips. I’m going to try it out!
Thank you so much, Amy! Glad you found them helpful. 🙂
Looking forward to cleaning my carpets? No, I don’t think so! But I do own a Bissell. It’s not this one (the Big Green Machine) but it is a great carpet cleaner! It’s no fun, though, and it’s a lot of work. It’s not heavy, until it fills up with dirty water! So no, I would say I never look forward to cleaning my carpets!
Ha! Me neither… but how cool that you own one of these and don’t have wait to it gets beyond gross to finally get to the store to rent one!
Thanks for the advice…
I really like the look after the carpets are cleaned. Now the smell of the water – yuck
I have hardwood floors at home but I can imagine how this can help people who have carpeted floors!
As for the question: What do you look forward to most about cleaning your rugs and carpet with a BISSELL Big Green rental?
It would be for the convenience that it brings. Especially since it seems like it’s easy to use!
I look forward not only to having clean carpets to walk barefoot on, but to having them smell fresh.
It would help me clean my rugs and carpets more effectively because I am fed up of buying products that only get rid of half of the stain!
Wow, nice products! I am looking for a product like that for my carpets, I hate cleaning them!
What I don’t like about cleaning is messy things! I am so glad that there are cleaning products that are actually helpful.
I love cleaning products, they are very helpful. Thanks for your review, gonna check the supermarket!
This will be so helpful around the house! It is a time saver
Oh my goodness, I would love to see what that Bissell Big Green would do to my carpets! With 2 kids, 2 dogs, a husband and a father-in-law in the house, you know my carpets are a mess!
The living room carpet is definitely due for a thorough cleaning. I need to rent one of those machines for a day.
I think this is a great checklist. I need to print one of these off. I really need to take a day off so that I can get some cleaning done.
Good Advice Thanks for sharing.
I’d really love to win because we’re getting ready to sell our house and the last parts that we’re working on is the cleaning and painting. I’d love to get our rooms deep cleaned
That a cute culprit! And wow, those are some mean machines, I can already tell that they’re built to work for long-term and scrounge up all those dirt.
Love your list, will print it and start right now! My house definitely needs it! Thank you for this great help!
I would love to clean my carpet! We have carpet in two bedrooms and the dogs have made a mess in them. I would love to give them a deep clean since we are trying to sell the house.
Thanks for the coupon. I have been spot cleaning my carpets. This would really make me feel they are clean.
Lalalala..hands in ears…I hate cleaning so i am not listening. LOL I tend to vacuum often though
i need this printables haha or probbly i won’t stick to it haha i just can’t plan things, im a bit of a mess when cleaning, or probably this will help me so much to be more clean
Oh wow, your rugs look great. I probably need one of those since I have 4 dogs and 4 year old. Also, your dog is adorable!
We have two furbabies and four young kids. With summer looming in our future and the traveling between outdoors and the living room, my poor carpet looks nothing like what we got when we purchased our home. I would love to win this to try to get back what i once had. Plus I love that you guys have done the work testing both! I have tried the Rug Doctor personally and was not impressed. I had a friend that told me about the Big Green and what great results she had. Now that I see your post, I know!
I am starting this list asap! Baby #3 is due in August and I am already in nesting mode!
Thank you for sharing your handy checklist with #HomeMattersparty this week!
I genuinely enjoy studying on this internet site, it contains good blog posts.
