Need a romantic vacation or even weekend getaway? Here are six ways to make it a success!
T and I just returned from the most romantic vacation! At a silent auction in Cancun last year, we bid on a trip to Secrets Resort in Huatulco, Mexico. I know… you’ve probably never heard of it. We hadn’t either. And, we had no idea what an amazing vacation spot this would turn out to be!
Want to plan your own romantic and relaxing vacation? Here are six ingredients for success:
1. Plan a trip for just the two of you. If you are like us, you’ve spent most of your trips in recent years with your kids and other families. We love those kinds of trips! But traveling alone together to Huatulco made this trip especially conducive to relaxation and lots of together time. No agenda. No one else to be responsible for. No one else to meet up with. Just one romantic vacation!
2. Be adventurous! On this trip, we took the opportunity to snorkel and to kayak. We wanted to take sailing lessons, too, but that got rained out. (Thankfully it only rained once!) The snorkeling was pretty good, especially considering we were on the Pacific side of Mexico. Kayaking in the ocean was awesome! If we had been there longer, we would have definitely explored the tropical beauty and lushness beyond the resort.
3. Plan plenty of time to do absolutely nothing. Sometimes we do so much on trips that we feel like we need a vacation from the vacation! This trip, we each took several books. We spent many a lazy hour reading and sipping mojitos on the beach. Pure heaven!
4. Pick a lesser-known, quiet vacation spot. Huatulco gets an A+ for this! Secrets Resort is located on its own Conejos Bay on the Pacific with no other resorts are in sight. The beach is quite expansive, and the pool area is very large and spread out. There is plenty of space for the hotel guests to have privacy. And because Huatulco is such a chill destination, it doesn’t attract young partiers. Plus, no one under 21 is allowed at Secrets. You’d be surprised how that affects the relaxation factor!
5. Enjoy a romantic dinner every evening and really catch up. Spend a little extra time to get dressed up and look nice for each other. This romantic get-a-way is a special occasion! Discuss topics you’ve been putting off or forgetting to mention because of life’s “busy-ness.” Reminisce about special times together in the past. Dream about where you want to go together next.
6. Spend time exploring your destination, taking in its special and unique beauty that you don’t get to experience at home. Hold hands as you wander around your home away from home. It’s so nice to have the opportunity explore to get away from the daily routines of life! On one of our evening strolls in Huatulco, we met the little guy pictured below. He made us laugh so hard!
Since we’re dreaming of future fun get-a-ways, I’d love to hear the places you love most! Let me know in the comments section below.

Andy and I are planning our first ever get away from our kids! 15 years!
FUN! I’m so happy for y’all! Where are you going???
My personal favorite is Florence, Italy. We’ve been twice & the romance of the city never gets old – I am so happy to simply wander around the city & take it all in! Josh & I love to go to cute towns that we can explore. We stay in nice hotels or B&Bs so we can relax a ton. We are going away in a month; can’t wait!!
That sounds amazing! Tom wants to go to Italy very badly! Hopefully we’ll make it there soon; I’ll check in with you for more tips then!
Grand Cayman island is magnificent and we got to go there first with Andrea and Tom!! She snorkeled when she was pregnant:) It is our east coast Hawaii! We went for our 25th anniversary and had an amazing time. The water is so clear and aquamarine colored! I could not photograph it’s beauty. We rented a sailboat and watched the marine life in the water below. Stingray city was one of my favorites with tame 4 foot stingrays you could hold! The island is safe, quiet and beautiful…you just have to get used to driving on the left! We were so blessed to go because It is a slice of heaven and we hope God allows a third trip there someday.
That trip was so much fun even though I was VERY pregnant! It’s so beautiful there. Hopefully we can all go back together!
I love the pic of grumpy crab….so cute…and glad the two of you had a good time!
Sounds like a perfect recipe! Always glad to find fellow empty nesters that are embracing this new chapter of life.
Thanks! Love to read about your adventures!
This sounds divine. I can’t wait for my next get away weekend with my empty nest hubby.
you look amazing in that black dress
