A Merry Yacht Life and Mistletoe Mojitos!
It’s been just over a year since Tom and I purchased our humble but adorable “yacht” in San Diego. She’s a 35-foot, 1983 Bayliner cabin cruiser, and we aptly christened her Sea Y’all! in homage to my southern roots and our many years in Texas!
Y’ALL!!! It’s SO MUCH FUN living the yacht life in San Diego! So much fun, in fact, that we make the two and a half hour drive to San Diego from the Palm Springs area virtually every weekend.
I love life on the water and Captain Tommy escapes all the stresses of work when he heads down J dock every weekend.
We also purchased a 15-foot Boston Whaler we named Hey Y’all! that we use to zip around the San Diego Bay when we don’t want the hassle of taking the larger boat out.
Everyone that passes us yells, “Hey, y’all!” And did I mention, Rosie and Rowdie LOVE boating!
While we miss out on some modern amenities by owning an older boat, there are actually some characteristics that I much prefer. My favorite feature of our vintage boat is all the wood… you really don’t see as much wood on newer boats. I also love the big windows (that open!) in the living area. Windows on newer boats typically don’t open much, if at all.
We’ve put our decorating touches on Sea Y’all, re-upholstered the cushions in the salon and the flybridge, and are slowly upgrading other parts as we can. (Refinishing the wood and getting new flybridge canvas and glass are next!)
Our little yacht may not be comparable in value to some of the fancy, newer boats in the marina, but she’s OURS and we love her! And because we’ve invested both financial resources as well as blood, sweat and tears into our boat, it’s important for us to know that she is fully protected by an insurance company we trust.
So we literally spent HOURS researching the right company for our needs here in San Diego. One big tip? Spend time talking to an independent agent to learn everything you need to know. Buying a boat (or any prized possession) requires so many details, my friends!
And now we have an amazing community of friends here in our marina. You know, back in the day, homes were situated close together and had front porches. Neighbors frequently chatted on the weekends or after work. These days, however, most people return home, pull into their garage and shut their door behind them. It seems to me like community has largely disappeared and people are more isolated. We love that we get to share life and community with our fellow marina dwellers!
In fact, I think living in the marina is the 21st century’s answer to the front porch of bygone eras!
We have dinner parties on the dock, Sunday brunch on the bay, and awesome boating adventures together. We greet each other good morning and good night because… well, our boats are just a few feet apart!
I love to create specialty drinks or appetizers for our marina buddies.
In the spirit of the holidays, I created a Mistletoe Mojito recipe to share. Mistletoe Mojitos are quite pretty and festive and super YUM, too!
How to Make Mistletoe Mojitos
- 3 sprigs of mint leaves
- ½ lime
- 2 Tbs simple syrup (stir mixture of 2 parts sugar to 3 parts hot water and chill)
- 1 ½ oz. your favorite rum
- Splash of club soda (or more to your liking)
- Fresh cranberries
- Muddle mint leaves and juice from lime in a tall glass.
- Cover with simple syrup and fill glass with ice.
- Add rum.
- Top off with club soda, and stir well.
- Garnish with lime wedge, cranberries and sprigs of mint.
- Easily make this for a crowd by multiplying ingredients and making the recipe in a pitcher instead of a glass!
Y’all Tom and I never even DREAMED we could be living this lifestyle. It’s truly more than we ever could have imagined! (I mean, who knew there were cute, little vintage yachts that make the marina life affordable?)
I know one day we’ll probably graduate to a larger, more modern boat, but in the meantime, we will keep on loving every evening we get to watch a beautiful sunset on Sea Y’all. And we’ll rest comfortably at night knowing we’ve taken the time to make sure she is fully protected by just the right insurance.
You can make sure what matters most to YOU is protected by finding an independent agent that puts relationships — not transactions — first! My kind of company, for sure. 🙂
Cheers & Sea Y’all!
Wow….such a cool lifestyle! Love the pretty pictures and thanks for the heads up about talking to an independent agent! You are right…..it is all about relationships and community!!
You’re making me miss my old life. I spent nearly 20 years as a chef working on and living aboard yachts. I love what you named the yacht and the dingy.
Great photos and that Mojito looks yummy!
so fun! I can’t enjoy the pleasures of a fine boat ride, not even for a few minutes. SO it was fun to take this holiday boat ride with you. Congratulations on making this new boat your own. Make happy and safe memories my friend. Hugs
P.S. thank you for sharing at TFT,it’s nice to have you back.
