DIY Painted Mug That Won’t Wash Away

DIY Painted Mug

Today I’m sharing a fun and easy craft that was created by my super cute and talented daughter-in-law, Shandi Tabler!

Shandi really is one of the most creative people I’ve ever met. One of my favorite parts of going back to visit San Antonio is seeing what she’s been up to. It’s usually cake decorating, crafty home decor projects, and outfits she has sewn that seriously blow me away! Today I’m sharing how she made a DIY painted mug with paint that will not wash away. It’s even dishwasher safe.

DIY Painted MugOne thing I love about this project is that it requires only two supplies: a mug and a DecoArt paint marker. Now this next point is very important… DecoArt paint markers are the KEY to creating a mug with paint that won’t wash away. You can find them here.

Okay… let’s get started. Wash your mug and dry it thoroughly.

Now it’s time to have fun creating your piece of art! You can paint a pattern (like Shandi did), words or an illustration following the instructions on the marker. And don’t worry if you mess up! Simply wipe away the mistake with some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip.

The next step also is very important! You must let it dry and cure for eight hours for it to be dishwasher safe. If that isn’t important to you, just let it dry for four hours. I know, you’ll want to put it in the oven right away. But you really can’t.

After the mug has dried, you can finally bake it. Preheat your oven to 375. Place the mug on a foil-lined baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes. After the mug has cooled, it is ready to use.

Imagine all the fun little personalized gifts you can make for friends, family. and teachers!

  12. This is great! I had no idea you could use this type of marker to get your design to stay on the mug. All my designs have been washed off over time and it’s such a pain to retrace them. Thank you for linking up at The Wednesday Roundup! I’m sharing your post on my facebook and twitter pages and pinning this!

  14. Hi, Andrea ~ I’m visiting from the Creativity Unleashed Link Party. I love this post! My son made the most adorable mug for his dad for Christmas. The mug was decorated with all of the words my son thought described his dad. But it all washed/rubbed off. Boo-hoo! Now I know how to redo it so that it will stick around for a long time. Thanks and have a great weekend!

  15. So cute! I love that it is permanent! I am pinning this and keeping this idea for gifts! Thanks for sharing!

  16. I love this! These would be such cute gifts at Christmas! Thank you for sharing on Idea Box link party!

  17. I’m seriously in awe of people that are so creative like she is. It baffles me. haha I’m so far from creative! I’ve heard about DIY mugs and tried it (unsuccessfully) once, but I’m wanting to try it again. Plain white mugs are just so boring! I’ll try Shandi’s way and see it how it turns out. Thanks for sharing your project at Inspire Me Mondays!

  18. Oh my goodness! I love this! A friend gave us hand-painted mugs that, unfortunately, have started to wash away. 🙁 They are super adorable mugs too! Thank you for sharing this because I was wanting to make hand-painted mugs but was afraid of the wash-away issues. This is so cute!

*I found you on the “Your Turn To Shine” link-up! 🙂
