It’s that time of year again… College freshmen packing up, ready to move into the dorm at the school they’ve been daydreaming about all summer long. The excitement is growing. Adventure and fun await!
But then there are mom and dad, left staring at each other in the empty nest. How did this happen? What shall we do? For some couples, the void in the empty nest can feel huge. Suffocating. Like a black hole that might just swallow them up.
But take heart, my fellow, empty nest moms and dads! All you need to do is look at this season of life through a different lens. Instead of looking at your circumstances through a lens of loss, look at your life through the lens of opportunity.
Think of it this way… for the past 18+ years, you have put others before yourself. That’s what good moms and dads do, right?
But by putting yourself second (or third, or fourth…), you’ve made sacrifices. You’ve missed opportunities. You haven’t explored new passions and interests because, quite frankly, that’s hard to do while raising kids.
You and your spouse have put the needs of others before yours. But now… Now you have the opportunity to step into a new season of life and embrace it together… wholeheartedly!
You can date each other all over again. Go on trips to places you wouldn’t take the kiddos. You can spend time hanging out with friends you whose company you love. You can go on adventures together and have great fun with new hobbies.
You can fall in love all over again…
So I encourage you to take off the lens that sees loss and replace it with the lens that sees opportunity. You now have the time and the freedom to choose where and how you’ll live. And that, my friend, is a gift worth receiving!

I love your optimistic attitude. I admit, I didn’t feel that way when my youngest went off to college but I’ve come to realize just how fun the empty nest can be!
Thanks for stopping by, Mo!!!
Oh yes, this time of life is ripe with opportunities! However did I have time to tend to kids, and work? lol
