A few years ago, my dear husband wanted to throw a party in January for his team at work. I came up with numerous clever themes (or at least I thought they were). After patiently listening to all my ideas, he told me he wanted it to be a football party. I winced! I wasn’t a fan of the idea at all. But after he promised me he there would be no plastic, football-shaped chip bowls or tacky pennants, I agreed and started trying to get creative for a classier football party that would still be manly enough for his tastes.
That’s when I stumbled upon the snackadium. I loved the idea from the moment I saw it. This was before my blogging days, folks, so the pictures are not the best. I was using whatever version iPhone I had at the time. And my snackadium was situated in front of a big sunny window; not great for photography. But I think you can still be inspired by the idea!
These days, you can find lots of information on how to build a snackadium. Back in 2012, I found several pictures with examples. Instructions were much harder to find. So this is what I came up with for a large stadium. (You can definitely scale it down!) Lots of aluminum pans in a variety of sizes and a glue gun were the two items I used to construct this big boy!
Before I started the construction, I placed astroturf on my table. Then I worked with the pans until I had the general shape of a stadium. I started with the football field, which I made from a casserole pan sitting inside a turkey roaster. I would recommend instead that you attach two small pans to a casserole dish to create your field with end zones. Next I glued them all together.
My perfectionism kicked in full swing when I decided that the outside of my stadium would be bricks, and that fans would line the inside. I found images of people and bricks and printed several sheets out on card stock. I thought it looked creative and served a dual purpose by hiding the sides of the pans.
The goal posts were made with Slim Jims attached with toothpicks. The football players were made of Slim Jims with black and green olives. The end zones can have any dips in contrasting colors. Seven layered dip topped with yard lines of sour cream are perfect for the football field. Do not add the players or the goal posts until right before the party.
You can fill the stands with all kinds of snack foods. I used a wide variety of chips, crackers, veggies, meats, cheeses and lettuce. Sandwich buns adorned the sides, while mini chicken salad sandwiches lined the front.
Flags made with skewers, cheese and summer sausage or salami surrounded the snackadium.
My snackadium was a great hit with our guests! I love making things that make guests feel special when they arrive. Yes, this took some time (all the more reason to ask a friend or two to help). But it was so fun to make and so yummy to eat!
Now I’ll show some inspiring snackadiums from other bloggers to get your creative juices flowing! Stephanie from Tastes Like Food made this awesome snackadium. She even added a bacon dome and a beer can blimp! I like that she included veggies in her version.
And here’s a great version of a stackadium for a smaller party or if you just want yours to be the appetizer for the day. This one was created by Stephanie from 52 Kitchen Adventures.
You can event create a dessert snackadium like this one by Dorothy from Crazy for Crust.
Ready to make your own snackadium? I hope so! And if you do, please share!
