Last week I wrote about our bucket list, VIP, New Year’s Eve in New York City. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Today I want to share a few other highlights from our week to give you tips and ideas for your next trip to the Big Apple!
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder
Our second night in the city, we saw A Gentlemans’s Guide to Love & Murder at The Walter Kerr Theatre. Based on the 1907 Edwardian novel “Israel Rank,” the musical follows Monty Navarro (played by Bryce Pinkham), a penniless bachelor that has just learned he is the long-lost member of the noble D’Ysquith family. AND that he is eighth in line for the title of Earl of Highhurst. When the family rejects his claim, the ambitious Monty sets out to eliminate each of the eight heirs, all brilliantly played by Jefferson Mays. The show is witty and hilarious… in fact, it won the 2014 Best Musical Tony Award. Tom and I both give it two thumbs up!
The Lambs Club
On New Year’s Day, we had brunch at The Lambs Club in the Theatre District after receiving a recommendation from an acquaintance here in the desert. It did not disappoint! The decor is of rich red leather seats, a huge fireplace (which we were thankfully seated in front of), and walls full of black & white photos. Stepping into this dining room is like stepping into a different time and era. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, while Tom got the Pressed Egg & Cheese Sandwich. We thoroughly enjoyed our entrees and the ambiance.
Since most people were still recuperating from the night before, the restaurant was quiet during our lunch. But I have no doubt that it’s hopping with activity nightly before the shows begin. We definitely recommend The Lambs Club. But if you are on a budget, best to stick with brunch and skip the cocktails!
Honeymoon in Vegas
Our last full day in the city, we decided to catch a matinee showing of Honeymoon in Vegas, adapted from the 1992 romantic comedy starring Nicholas Cage, Sarah Jessica Parker and James Caan. The Broadway version stars Tony Danza, who sings, dances and even plays the ukelele. It’s quirky and silly and we absolutely loved it! They were still working out some very minor kinks, as the show is still in preview and opens this week.
5 Napkin Burger, Hell’s Kitchen
After the matinee, we headed over for our 5:30 p.m. reservation at 5 Napkin Burger. I selected it after noting it was ranked as the number two restaurant in the Theatre District. We arrived a half an hour early to a packed restaurant and standing-room-only bar. This place is clearly a winner with locals and tourists alike! It’s eclectic, bustling, and chic. The menu is extremely diverse with everything from burgers to sushi to salads to chicken and waffles. Which is what I had. Always trying to make wise menu choices, I never order fried chicken. And I never order waffles. But I on this night, I went for it. Oh my goodness! I love me some chicken and waffles! Tom had the lobster sliders and cheesy tater tots. Despite the crazy, busy atmosphere, the service was excellent and the food amazing. I would surely go again.
Don’t Tell Mama
We first visited Don’t Tell Mama four years ago. We found it our last night there and basically closed the place down. Though DTM boasts a restaurant, cabaret and piano bar, the latter is what appealed to us. So on this visit, we knew we had to visit again. Since we would have a 4 a.m. alarm to leave for the airport the next day, we headed over to get a good seat at 8 and said we would only stay until 9:30. But we were simply enjoying the fun too much and we of course stayed later with no regrets. What makes DTM so unique is its incredibly talented singing staff of bartenders and waiters that have Broadway, Off-Broadway and National Touring credits. With the whole restaurant singing along to every song, this is New York City fun at it’s best!
