About a month ago, I shared the story of Pumbaa, our precious Cairn Terrier who has been a part of the Tabler Family for 11 years. He’s the most cheerful, fun-loving, adventurous dog you’ll ever meet! Unfortunately, we learned a few months ago that he has untreatable cancer. So how can we show our love and celebrate our sweet furry family member? Take him adventures, of course!
This is part two in the series sharing Pumbaa’s bucket list. In part one, we shared a camping trip in Temecula, California, and the winery we visited. This past weekend, Tom and I celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary at The Ritz-Carlton in Rancho Mirage. Pumbaa has always wanted to visit the swanky Ritz, so we took him and his brother Rowdie along for the adventure! We were all thrilled that the Ritz is a pet-friendly resort.
Pumbaa loved hanging out at the Ritz. Lots of plants to mark and sights to see! He especially enjoyed looking out at the fabulous view from our suite.
Speaking of the suite, we were spoiled beyond imagination! It was simply gorgeous. Our first surprise was when we stepped into the suite (each with a complimentary glass of champagne we were offered at check in). A lovely amenity was awaiting us with a framed photo of Tom and me!
Um, yes… This place knows how to do it right! Pumbaa thought the chocolate-covered strawberries were made just for him, but we reminded him that chocolate can make him sick. “Not to worry!” we told him. We had brought some special treats with us for the pups.
Saturday evening, Tom and I dined at The Edge Steak House at the resort. It was simply divine! Then we were surprised when we returned to the suite to find a rose petal heart on the bed. We decided to let Pumbaa think it was just for him. ๐
The next morning, the boys explored the property with their dad. They were excited to see other four-legged friends on the property. In fact, this resort even has an official hotel dog! Pumbaa thought that was just about the coolest thing he’d over heard of. After checking out the beautiful grounds and marking as many plants as possible, the boys headed back to the suite. Pumbaa was quite taken with the comfy, soft hotel bathrobe and insisted on posing with it.
We really don’t know who much longer we have with our dear pup. We want to go on some more adventures with him and strike things off his doggie bucket list! He doesn’t seem to be in any pain yet, but he’s definitely not the same. He’s not as excited to play and chase balls as he used to be. But his appetite is extremely hearty, and he’s as happy as ever! We are hoping to have a few more months with Pumbaa, but as the cancer spreads, it is becoming harder and harder for him to breathe through his left nostril. It’s all heart breaking, but we will love and celebrate him with adventures as long as we can.

How cute-love the one with the roses! Happy Anniversary! Visiting from Mom 2 Mom linky.
Thank you, April!
Such a lovely story honoring your furbaby. I love Pumba so much…he is one of the cutest dogs ever…right up there with Rudy! I feel sad to know he will be leaving us, but I understand…having just gone through it. I love his bucket list adventures, thans so much for sharing them with us…..what lucky dog to have you and Tom as his humans.
Love you,
Mimi
He love you, too! xoxo
Please give him a scratch and pet from Auntie Patch. What a beautiful pup!
Will do!
This such a lovely post, but tears are streaming down my face as I read it, i shared it with my hubby too and he and I both agree you are wonderful fur baby parents. I am truly deeply sorry to learn that Pumbaa has cancer. You will surely make his last days before he reaches the rainbow bridge extra special. xxoo
Thank you, sweet Katherine! xo
So sweet! Pun intended! Glad you are making his life wonderful.
This post made me sad and happy at the same time. We went through something very similar with our Bichon ten years ago. After her diagnosis, it only took a month for her to leave us…the day after Christmas. Dogs are getting cancer so much more now than they used to it is quite scary. Pumba looks like such a sweet, happy boy and it’s obvious you both love him very much, and he loves you.
I sure his last days will be filled with love and happiness.
Thank you for visiting, Doreen. ๐
