How to Start a Blog… A Step by Step Guide!
I frequently meet people who want to start a blog or online business, but only a small percentage of those individuals actually do. I think that’s because the world of blogging is so gigantic in its possibilities that people are intimidated about how to start and what to write about.
But here’s a fact: even though there are thousands and thousands of bloggers generating massive amounts of content every day, there’s still a space for you. Yes, YOU!
Let me explain why. Perhaps you want to be a food blogger because you love cooking healthy, delicious recipes for your family. You haven’t started yet because you aren’t sure you can succeed in finding an audience for a topic that is already popular on the internet.
But guess what? You CAN succeed! Why?
Because no one else is you.
No one else creates recipes just like you do.
No one else has your personality, ideas and life experiences.
Do you see what I’m getting at? Readers don’t connect with a product or a recipe. They connect with a person. And that person can be you!
Now that we’ve identified that there IS a space for you, here are five things to consider and think about before you start your blog.
5 Things to Consider Before You Start a Blog
1) What are you passionate about?
Naturally, your blog should be fueled by great passion! When we are passionate about a subject, we have lots of thoughts and ideas that we can communicate easily and effortlessly. When we are passionate about a topic, we frequently become experts because of the time we spend there. And when we are passionate, it shows! Others see our passion and want to learn more. This is exactly where you should start when considering what to blog about.
NOTE: If you are having problems identifying your biggest passions or if you have several passions and are not sure which to pursue, you might really appreciate the clarity you’ll get from the My Intentional Life Planner that I recently created!
2) Are you wanting to start a new hobby? Or a business?
I knew from the very beginning that Tabler Party of Two was a business, and I treated it that way from the start (WAY before I made a single dime!). Starting a blog as a hobby is perfectly okay, but here’s my two cents on the matter… Blogging takes time, effort and expertise. A lot of each. Fact: There are many, many ways bloggers can be compensated for expertise and effort through monetization. So why not go into it with a goal of monetizing and building your own business?
3) Do you work well independently?
If you thrive with a team in the structure of an office, you should consider how you will do working from home. Some people can work well in both environments. Take time to think about how working alone will feel for you. Are you self-motivated? What’s your personality type?
That said, don’t jump to the conclusion that you can’t work from home if you love being around others and enjoy the office environment. I am an extrovert who LOVES being on a team and working with others. I’m a people person through and through. Yet I have worked from a home office for over 26 years. And I have loved it the entire time! Working from home all these years has provided me with freedom and flexibility than a corporate career would never have afforded.
4) Determine your niche.
As I mentioned above, your topic should be derived from your passion. But you are probably passionate about more than one topic. So how do you narrow it down? That can be hard. When I started, I decided I wanted to write about more than one topic. So my niche (which is quite broad) is lifestyle blogger.
There is nothing wrong with choosing a broad niche. However, your blog will most likely grow much faster with a narrower niche. People searching for specific solutions to their problems will more easily find you when you consistently write about one specific topic.
Using my Healthy Recipes for Families example above… That would be a specific niche in recipes, but even better might be Paleo Recipes for the Family. Or G-Free Recipes for the Family.
5) The need that exists for a specific topic.
As you examine your passions and try to narrow down which one you will pursue in your blog, be mindful of where there might be a real need for content on a topic. You may have a passion and expertise in an area that very few bloggers are writing about. If this is the case for you, congratulations! You’re passion + audience need = RECIPE FOR SUCCESS!

This is a great list of things to consider before you start a blog. I wish I had read this before I started blogging. Of course, I probably never would have started blogging in the first place because to this day I still haven’t figured out what I’m the MOST passionate about yet. I’ve been blogging for over four years now and love every bit of it.
These are great tips! I love making the decision between whether it is going to be a hobby or a business. That is an important distinction to make. Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday this week!
Numbers 2 and 3 are the reasons why I *finally* started a blog. If I could add a part b) to any of the above would be that it’s a lot more work than you thinks, or so I discovered. I truly had no idea! But it’s also a fun challenge to conquer. Visiting from Inspiration2 party.
Great tips and things to think about! I’ll be referring back to this one!
